People with diabetes are at risk of developing eye damage called diabetic retinopathy. With early diagnosis and treatment, damage can be reduced or avoided.
Where a person has been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, the General Practice Team will refer them to an Optometrist in their area for an eye examination, to closely monitor any changes. This check should be completed every 2 to 3 years following the initial examination.
Through funding from the DHB, Central PHO have secured contracts with several Optometrists both within and around the Central PHO region, ensuring access for all patients.
