TOAM is a DHB funded Community Stop Smoking Service, that is engaged to reduce smoking rates in the mid-central region to 5% by 2025. TOAM works in collaboration with its partner, Central PHO to run Stop Smoking Clinics in General Practices and with the DHB to provide services at hospital clinics, as well as in communities.
TOAM have a dedicated team of stop smoking coaches covering Dannevirke to Pahiatua and Eketahuna in the east, to Palmerston North, Levin, Shannon, Foxton and Otaki and out to Feilding and Apiti in the west.
Matanga (Coaches) provide a culturally responsive service to groups and all individuals, Maori, Pasifika and hapu mama – pregnant women are a particular focus as smoking rates are highest in these groups of people.
Clients are supported through a 4-week programme to quit smoking, using a combination of NRT (Nicotine Replacement Therapy) and personal coaching, and also “Vape to quit” programmes for those using e-cigarettes to stop smoking.
It is sad and thought provoking to note that NZ buries 5,000 people per year from smoking related illnesses, more than car crashes…and Maori woman have the World Record for dying from lung cancer. TOAM is passionate about reversing these statistics; in adding 10-15 years to your life the day you quit!
